You know, it was awful for her family. I mean, I got this sort of chill through my body, like there was some sort of electric spark, and I remember, in my head, thinking, 'What the hell was that?'". Cetir came to Macchiarini's attention after undergoing an elective procedure to correct a condition that caused excessive sweating. She said she called the castle where all the guests were supposed to be staying and asked them about the reservation, which they didn't have. It was killing me, and but I was also so in love with him. I love some pressure, let's go for it. In fact, he told me that Paolo would often leave their interview to engage in some frantic texting with someone, probably a lover, probably Benita. But despite his seemingly busy schedule, Alexander said Macchiarini offered to plan their wedding. When she continued to press Macchiarini about the pope, she said he blamed Vatican politics, alleging that the more conservative former Pope Benedict went behind Pope Francis' back to stop him from officiating the wedding. That's next week on The Perfect Scam. Her colleague had sent an article that said the pope would not be in Rome, or even Italy, on the day of their wedding. As Alexander began to unravel the web of lies Macchiarini had told her, she began to wonder if the world-renowned thoracic surgeon had also misled people in his professional life. And so now his son, who I think was about 8 or 9 at the time, was in Brazil with her family, and he was engaged in this very difficult and complicated fight to try and get his son back, and such a loving father. And she meets Christopher at his shop. And I had seen paperwork that he had done work at the Vatican, consulting work. And when we went to Boston to interview Dr. Macchiarini, when he came in, it was um, I was with a colleague, and he, he came into this bar where we had arranged to have a coffee with him just to say hello the night before the interview, and you know there's, he's a very charming, good-looking man. [00:02:15] Bob: Still a young journalist, she found her way to the top of her profession very quickly. And it came down to how are we going to accomplish doing all these pieces for this wedding that is going to be so high profile, so exclusive, I mean I've never heard of anything so, it was, I mean in my career I've experienced some great things; this was wow. Benita is the Executive Producer of the documentary film, He Lied About Everything, which premiered in the U.S. in 2018 on Investigation Discovery, and continues to be broadcast around the world. These were made in a lab out of the very same plastic that a soda bottle is made out of, and then he would bathe this in the patient's own stem cells in something called a bioreactor, and then transplant that, this plastic windpipe into people. In 2020, she appeared on the ABC documentary series The Con to discuss her personal life and narrate what happened between her and Paolo Macchiarini. Her multiple awards include: Edward R. Murrow, 2 Emmys, 7 Emmy nominations, Alfred I. duPont-Columbia, NABJ and Sigma Delta Chi. And he had been fighting with her in the courts in Brazil over this, and then she passed away, unfortunately. "He was a good listener and gave me sage and solid advice.". He, he had sort of slowly moved his way into my heart and I, I think I just really needed to be wrapped in love at the time, and I, yeah, we fell in love. In September 2020, Swedish prosecutors announced charges against Macchiarini for aggravated assault in connection to three surgeries that he had performed at the Karolinska University Hospital, including Cetir's. "Paolo was a really good listener," Alexander said. She is an executive producer, narrator, writer and director known for her work in the true crime genre. We just made sure we took care of Benita. As a producer, for me that was next to impossible. In need of a lung transplant, doctors arranged to transfer her to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Lindquist said the documentary sparked outrage in Sweden, and weeks later, new investigations into Macchiarini began. I was torn up about it, and my last day at NBC was in May of 2015. We have somebody who has been brave enough to share something thats already humiliating and devastating. He was kind of a rebel. Among several lies, Macchiarini told Alexander, one of those was Pope Francis officiating their wedding. I didn't, you know, how do you, how do you not ask any questions, but all my friends convinced me, they said, "You know, Benita, you know he has amazing taste. Not, not that kind of just instant, immediate spark. [00:01:59] Benita: I had worked my way up from working in, from tiny little newspapers in Detroit, Michigan, which is where I went to college and where I'd, my family had moved after Australia. And, and so we pivoted the story a bit to make it a little bit more about some of Paolo's other patients and more about, you know the field of regenerative medicine. Are you new to podcasts? While still trying to care for Cetir, Corbascio said his team found that Macchiarini had exaggerated the effectiveness of his surgeries and falsified data to make the surgeries seem more successful than they were. And we rode for probably 30, 45 minutes until I sort of found a spot that I thought was appropriate, and I got off the bike and I went to the water. And this is something very clandestine and secretive and he cant talk about, but hes been doing this for many years, and he is a celebrity surgeon to a number of famous people and celebrities, but that he cant talk about this because hes tied to people who want a private doctor who will attend to them but, you know, they have these private doctors, because they don't want anyone to know, you know, whats going on in their private life.
