Nepal to have its first modern train unit today
Kathmandu. A train set, complete with engine and five bogies, is set to arrive at Janakpur on Friday.
The train, manufactured in Chennai of India, is planned to operate in the Kurtha-Janakpur-Jayanagar route, the end terminals being Kurtha of Dhanusa, Nepal and Jayanagar of India.
Balaram Mishra, Director General of Department of Railways informed that legal barriers deemed to arise in the transfer process had been resolved and if things went as planned, the train would reach Janakpur on Friday.
The infrastructural development of the 35-kilometer Jayanagar-Kurtha segment is already complete. After the completion of the Kurtha-Bijayalpura 17-kilometer segment, the track will extend to a total of 52 kilometers. Nepal Railway Corporation has already initiated the recruitment process for the required manpower.
The Railway Department had signed a deal in May 2019 with Konkan Railway Corporation, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways. The train can accommodate 1,300 passengers in its six carriages. It uses ‘diesel electrified multiple unit’ technology, the first of its kind used in Nepal.
