It has been established through two different studies that coronavirus spreads faster in flights. According to a report published on Friday, it revealed that a flight which was headed from London, UK to Hanoi, Vietnam had a coronavirus patient who infected fifteen more people.

The woman who boarded the flight on March 1, 2020, had sore throat and cough but was determined to reach her home at Hanoi. According to a news report from CNN, when the flight landed after ten hours, fifteen others were already infected by the virus. The researchers from National Institute of Hygiene in Hanoi have been studying this incident.

Researchers confirmed through the genetic sequencing of the virus that the infected people had the same genome as the woman. The woman from Hanoi who travelled from business class is said to have affected twelve people from business class, two people from economy class and one crew member from the flight. The risk of the outspread of Covid-19 has been said to be higher in long distance flights. Screening and testing along with maintaining social distance is required to tackle the virus, according to researchers.

In a journal published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an article studying the “In-Flight Transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2” recorded a similar account in Hong Kong. The report studied 1,110 people from January to June 2020, who had Covid-19. A couple traveling from Boston to Hong Kong infected two flight attendants. The incident occurred during the early days of the pandemic when wearing masks during flights were not compulsory.
