Nine suspects arrested in India: Accused of being al-Qaeda operatives
New Delhi. India’s National Anti-Terrorism Investigation Agency (NIA) gave a statement on Saturday that it has arrested 9 individuals they believed were al-Qaeda operatives, from Kerala and West Bengal during a raid on Friday.
The Economic Times reported that the raid was conducted after a warning provided by the central intelligence agencies. The information claimed that al-Qaeda had inter-state networks in various parts of India, including West Bengal and Kerala. The raid was carried out by NIA with the help of the respective state police at Ernakulam in Kerala and Murshidabad in West Bengal.
The arrested persons, 6 from West Bengal and 3 from Kerala have been taken into police custody and will be presented before the concerned courts for further investigation. NIA stated that the accused were associated with the Pakistan-sponsored al-Qaeda terror unit and were planning to carry out acts of terrorism.
According to The Hindu, NIA has seized a large quantity of incriminating materials, including documents, jehadi literature, armors and articles used for making home-made explosives.
