Kathmandu. Indian Prime Minister  Narendra Modi insinuated the need of permanent membership of India  in the UN Security Council during his speech at the United Nation’s General Assembly (UNGA).

Head of states and governments of different countries are addressing the ongoing UNGA and it was Indian PM Narendra Modi’s turn on Saturday.

In his recorded video address, Modi questioned as to why India had been barred from being involved in making important decisions at the UN.

The Indian prime minister asserted that India is the world’s largest democracy comprising of 18 percent of the total human populace and is a huge economy. He noted that keeping it at bay from decisions impacting the world could not be considered appropriate. He also asked when India’s wait for the permanent membership of Security Council would be over,

India has been demanding reforms in the Security Council, saying a structure set up in 1945 does not reflect contemporary realities of the 21st century and is ill-equipped to handle current challenges.

For a permanent seat, India has garnered support from four of the five permanent members of the Security Council – US, UK, France and Russia. China, however, is against the notion.
