Kathmandu. Keshav Kumar Sharma, the Director General of the state’s Road Department has claimed that the construction of a four-lane bridge on the Mechi River at the Nepal-India border has linked Nepal’s east-west highway to the “A-Class” Asian Highway.

With the assistance of the Asian Development Bank ( ADB), the 790-meter-long bridge was erected under the premise of free movement and trade between the Asian countries through roads. Along with the Mechi Bridge, a 1.5 km “Asian Highway Approach Road” has also been constructed towards Nepal.

Nepal’s East-West Highway falls under Route-2 of the Asian Highway that begins from Bangkok, passes through Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, from Kakadvitta in Nepal. It reaches Banbasa via East-West Highway and finally ends at Karachi via Delhi.  Similarly, Nepal’s Araniko Highway falls under Route-42 of the Asian Highway that connects India and Lhasa through Raxual in India and Birgunj, Narayanghat and Dhulikhel in Nepal.
