Kathmandu.  Sri Lanka says 21 containers of rubbish have been returned to the United Kingdom because they contained dangerous items. According to customs officials, they found hospital waste in many of the 263 containers sent by a private company. The garbage that was loaded on the ship was supposed to have old mattresses, carpets and rugs that could be reused. However, plastic and polythene garbage was also found in the containers.

The case was taken to court after Sri Lanka seized the containers in 2018 and officials mention sending 21 of those containers back to the UK on Saturday. According to Sunil Jayaratne, a Spokesman for Sri Lanka’s Customs Department, the containers sent to Sri Lanka contained hazardous waste and its removal was in violation of European Union and international law.

The UK Environment Department has said it is committed to tackling the problem of illegal waste exports. A spokesperson for the department stated, “We are in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities and we have asked them for more information so that we can launch an official investigation.” In January, Malaysia had also returned 42 containers of illegal plastic waste to the UK.
