Ex-Vice President of Maldives jailed for money laundering

Male. Ahmed Adeeb, the ex-vice president of Maldives has been sentenced for 20 years of jail on Monday. The Maldives Criminal Court charged him with money laundering and misuse of government authority along with other charges. He was also fined with an amount of $129,892. The current government founded an asset recovery commission through which they found out that he sold the islands in Maldives were sold below the market prices, which incurred enormous losses for Maldives.
Adeeb in his statement said that he is ready to co-operate to recover the lost money. He was also charged with similar cases in the previous years, although he was released from house imprisonment in 2019.
