Singapore Government to provide cash incentive to citizens who plan babies amidst pandemic

BBC. Singapore Government has announced that they will be providing one-time cash incentive for its citizens who plan to have a baby amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. They will be providing up to $10,000 for the eligible parents. The government is yet to announce on how and when the incentive shall be distributed.

Singapore has been trying to increase its population since many years. Their fertility rate hit an eight-year low in 2018 with 1.14 births per woman. It has been stated that expecting parents have now postponed their parenthood due to financial problems owing to the pandemic. Singapore’s neighbors, Philippines and Indonesia, however have witnessed a spike in pregnancies during its lockdown period.
