Bir Hospital to expedite PCR tests, using automatic machines from Sunday
Kathmandu. The public have been dissatisfied with Bir Hospital’s delay in providing the PCR reports of the COVID-19 tests. People complain that Bir Hospital provides the result after four days, whereas, it is available in 12 hours at other hospitals.
Kedar Prasad Century , director of Bir Hospital, however, says that the large number of swabs collected is to be blamed. He told that Bir hospital has the capacity to collect and process 200 swabs a day but they have been collecting 500 to 600 swabs daily, which has caused the delay.
“To solve the existing problem, Bir Hospital is planning o use automatic machines for PCR tests. The use of automatic machines will limit the duration to a mere 10 hour,“ Dr Century informed. “The hospital has the machine but we lack testing kits, which have to be imported.”
“The kits are costly. 10,000 test kits cost about 10 million rupees and the hospital is short of budget at present.” Dr Century added.
The hospital is planning to procure 2000 kits in the first phase and start tests using the automatic machine from Sunday. The reports will be made available the same day.
