Kathmandu. Dr. Govinda KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon, has been on his 19th hunger strike since September 14, demanding reforms in the nation’s medical education. The representatives of Dr. KC have now started talks with the government to ensure that his demands are heard. The government has formed a four-member committee, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health and Population, and the Medical Education Commission.

Nepali Congress leaders and several prominent institutions have been constantly pushing the leading party to take a serious call regarding the situation, as Dr. KC has been in a critical condition and is currently admitted in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. When the government representatives had requested him to end his hunger strike, he in turn requested that a committee be formed and for it to hold talks with his representatives. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the government, considering the present state of the doctor’s health, was taking his demands seriously.
