Malaysia challenges China, arrests 60 Chinese nationals in the South China Sea
Kathmandu. Malaysia’s Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized six Chinese fishing vessels that had entered the straits of Johor illegally off the Malaysian coast. Malaysia has also detained 60 Chinese nationals who were on board.
The agency was patrolling its area on Friday, according to MMEA Tanjung Sedili maritime zone director, Captain Maritime Mohd Zulfadli Nayan. The ships were seen in two different places. The Malaysian official claimed, “We had received information from the Johor Port Authority that some ships have entered our border. Our patrol team spotted them at a distance of 2-3 nautical miles. Three of these ships were circling close to each other. They had six captains and 54 crew members.”
According to officials, all of those who were on board were Chinese citizens. They ranged in age from 31 to 60 years old. A case has been registered against them under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance. In such a case, all the crew members can be fined 100,000 Malaysian Ringgits and even jailed.
