Kathmandu. Nepal has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a second term for the next three years. Out of the 47 seats of the council, four are allotted for the Asia-Pacific. China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan had contended for the membership along with Nepal.

Vice Cahir at the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (UN CEDAW) Bandana Rana told DCNepal that among the five nations, Saudi Arabia received the least votes and was denied the membership. The term of the newly elected working committee starts from January 1.

Pakistan received 169 votes, Uzbekistan 164 and China 139. Saudi Arabia came fifth with just 90 votes, beaten by Nepal with 150. With the election of the 15 members on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia’s stint at the UNHRC ends after this year.

All 193 UN member countries can vote in each region. Experts say that the current system of entry to UNHRC is needs a reform since some countries deriding human rights are being elected. Recently, human rights groups from Europe, the United States and Canada had called on UN member states to oppose the election of China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Pakistan and Uzbekistan, saying their human rights records are objectionable.
