Kathmandu. Remdesivir is the only antiviral drug, tested and proven, that can be utilized in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. That is not to say, though that it can wholly cure the concerned patient. Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States of America, was also administered with the drug when he was tested positive for the virus.

The trials of the drug involved over 1,000 hospitalized patients from around the globe, and showed that the drug was more effective in speeding up the recovery time by 5 to 7 days, and reducing the risk of death by 30%. The demand for this trial drug is increasing in Nepal. Last month, the Department of Drug Administration (DDA) had allowed private companies to import 6000 vials of Remdesivir that has already been distributed. An additional 7000 vials were received via donations and were handed out to the designated hospitals by the National Health Research Council (NHRC).

In September, The Government of India had also provided 2,000 vials of Remdesivir to Nepal through its Embassy in Kathmandu. As the shortage increased, the DDA authorized the import of an additional 6000 vials on Saturday. However, it has been estimated that the medicines will arrive only after a couple of weeks.
