Number of infections soar after Second Wave of Covid-19 hits Spain
Kathmandu. Since the first reported cases of COVID-19 in the Wuhan city of China, the contagion has spread to more than 200 countries. Initially, in March and April, Spain and Italy, were nations in Europe that were severely hit by the pandemic with increasing number of infections. However, the numbers had decreased after May.
The second wave of viral infection is now being observed in Spain since the past few weeks. The Spanish Ministry of Health on Tuesday confirmed 7,118 positive cases and 406 deaths last week. Spain has now become the first country within the European Union to reach 900,000 infections. The 14-day record of infection rate in the capital city Madrid is found to be more than twice of Spain’s national average and five times to that of the average European rate. To minimize the spread, on Friday, the Spanish government had declared a 15-day state of emergency in the capital, Madrid.
Owing to political tensions, however, the Government has now decided to impose a partial lockdown. The decision is also the result of the several restaurant and bar owners, who had protested in Barcelona on Wednesday, saying that they had already suffered a huge hit in the spring lockdown. The restaurants must limit their occupancy to 50% and have been directed to close at 11 p.m., while the stores are supposed to close at 10 p.m.
