China warns US that it can detain American citizens
Kathmandu. China has sent out a warning to the United States of America that it could detain American citizens in its territory. The U.S. Department of Justice has also warned of the possibility of detention for Americans in response to lawsuits against scholars linked to the Chinese military. The Wall Street Journal quoted sources mentioning that the Chinese government had already warned the United States regarding this through various means.
The Wall Street Journal added that China had sent a message to the United States stating that it should stop prosecuting Chinese people in the US courts. Failure of doing so would result in the persecution of Americans living in China for violating the Chinese law.
The White House referred the matter to the State Department, to which they have yet to make any comments. The Department of Justice too did not issue a statement in that regard. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has also declined to speak on this matter. The State Department had issued an advisory on September 14, earlier this year, advising Americans not to travel to China to be on the safer side.
