Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Lee Kun-hee dies at 78

Lee Kun-hee had a heart attack in 2014 and was treated for lung cancer in late '90s.

Seoul. South Korean Electronics Company, Samsung on Sunday has announced the death of its 78-year old Chairman, Lee Kun-hee, the richest man in South Korea.

Though the exact reason for his death was unspecified in the company’s statement, Lee had been bedridden since the heart attack he faced in May 2014. His health condition was also sensitive after he was treated for lung cancer in the late 1990s.

Samsung was founded by Lee’s father in 1937 as a small business. Lee had taken the chairmanship after his father’s death in 1987. Since then, Lee had made the biggest contribution in upgrading Samsung from a small electronic parts maker to the world’s biggest manufacturer of smartphones and televisions.

Lee was the largest individual shareholder, with a 4.18% stake in Samsung which generates one-fifth of South Korea’s GDP. In 2014, Forbes listed Lee as the 35th most powerful person in the world.
