The Aegian Sea quake: Are Nepalis in Turkey and Greece safe?
Kathmandu. A massive earthquake of 7.0 magnitude hit the Aegean Sea on Friday causing damages in cities in Turkey and Greece. While the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude as 7.0, the Turkish authorities claim that the magnitude was 6.6.
The epicenter of the quake was 17 km off the coast of the city of Izmir in Turkey. According to an article in CNN, 26 people have been killed and 804 have been injured.
Initial reports have shown that all Nepalis residing in Turkey and Greece are safe. According to Ujjwal Kumar Ghising, chairman of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) in Turkey, the earthquake went at a place where few Nepalis reside, therefore, Nepalis in Turkey were safe. He further added, “We are now collecting details of the earthquake damage. According to the information received by NRNA until now, the Nepali community is completely safe.”
It is estimated that around 2000 Nepalis reside in Turkey, out of which few live in the city of Izmir. The NRNA Turkey has requested Nepalis affected by the earthquake, if any, to contact the organization.
