Kathmandu. On February 27, the 37-year old Indian Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by Pakistan after an aerial dogfight in which Varthaman’s plane was shot down by Pakistani jets. He was later released on March 1 at night.

After half a year from the incident, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in the National Assembly held last week, made a remark recalling the events that led to the aforementioned release. He said that Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa was sweating and had a shaking leg at a meeting of Pakistan’s top leaders justifying it as a fear that India would attack Pakistan if the commander was not released.

Sadiq’s controversial statement triggered a huge wave of backlash. He was tagged as a “traitor” in a troll poster that featured him with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the IAF pilot Varthaman. The poster is now overflowing social media.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, reacting to Sadiq’s statement, stated that the government of Pakistan took the decision as a gesture of peace between the two countries and not under pressure.

NDTV reported that Pakistan’s Interior Minister Ijaz Ahmed Shah claimed that the government of Pakistan is planning to register a treason case against the opposition leader Sadiq because the police have received a number of complaints against him.
