US election 2020: polls closed, counting of votes begun
Agencies. The US citizens have cast their votes in the most divided and uncertain election for the last many decades. The results have started to pour in now.
There are speculations about a stiff competition between the incumbent President Donald Trump and the Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden. Elections in the East Coast region concluded the earliest, whereas many states in the west saw the polling being carried till late into the day.
First lady Melania Trump cast her vote in Palm Beach, Florda. When asked by the reporters as to why she was not with her husband, the President, she answered that she was there to cast her vote on the election day. Trump had already cast his vote a week ago.
Though attentions are being focused on the presidential election, voters are electing new members of the Congress too. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the US has informed that the COVID-19 infected are also exercising their voting rights.
Advertisement plays a crucial role in American elections and this year it has been no exception. The two US parties ran rigorous advertisement campaigns domineering at each other in spite of the threats posed by the corona pandemic Joe Biden’s Democratic party spent 638 million US dollars in their campaign, most of which was used for television advertisements..Trump’s team’s advertisement expense has been 472 million US dollars, lesser than that of Biden’s. Trump is supposed to have spend 43 million US dollars more than Biden in digital advertisements..The expenditure records have been provided by the Kantar/CMAG as of today morning.
One of the townships to announce result at the earliest is Dixville Notch. It has a population of 12. Joe Biden has taken all five votes there.
The US practices a two-party political system. The president can either be from the Republican Party (Donald Trump) of from the Democratic Party (Joe Biden). Election is held once every four years in which citizens 18 years and above are eligible to vote..The two candidates for the presidency contend to get more votes of the electoral college which is determined by the population of each state. A candidate must receive at least 270 electoral votes.
