Demand for one-third representation of women in the Nepali Congress
Kathmandu. Girija Prasad Koirala Foundation on Wednesday organized a virtual conference termed as the ‘14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress and Women’s Leadership’. Participants from the conference demanded that women must constitute one-third of the party representation from the Central to the Ward level.
Speaking on the occasion, party central member and former Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala said that the Nepali Congress is working to establish women’s rights and interests. She further added, “Women are the drivers of every change in the country. The party should give special place to women.” Party central member and former minister Kamala Pant has stated that the Congress should provide at least one-third of the party’s active membership to women.
Congress Central Member and Member of Parliament Dr Dilla Sangraula said that women should lead in the upcoming general convention.
The participants have condemned the recent acts of violence against women, such as rape and murder. They have criticized that the government cannot violate the constitutional and democratic provisions on the basis of being the major ruling party. They also have warned the government that since the coronavirus pandemic could go out of hand due to the rising cases, adding that they should provide free testing and treatment.
