Kremlin spokesperson denies reports of Putin stepping down due to health concerns
Kathmandu. Dmitry Sergeyevich Peskov, the Press Secretary for the President of Russia, said that Putin is in excellent health condition and will not resign soon. “No. He is in excellent health,” he claimed, when asked a question about the President stepping down.
A news portal from UK, The Sun had earlier reported that Putin was planning to resign in early 2021, citing health conditions. The report came after the proposal of a new law by Russian legislature which will provide ex-Presidents immunity against any criminal offenses, while they are not in their offices.
According to an article in Al Jazeera, the bill also has provisions to allow Putin to re-run for the Presidency when his current term is over, along with other constitutional amendments.
However, the bill will only become law if the lower house votes to approve it in three readings, the upper house backs it and finally when Putin will sign it. Putin is one of the longest serving Presidents of Russia.
