Refugee stories: A man who has not eaten anything since the election day in hopes to reunite with family
Kathmandu. Many refugees in the United States are eagerly waiting for the 2020 US Presidential Election to conclude. Afkab Hussein is one of them.
Hussein arrived in the United States nearly five years ago after spending more than a decade in Kenya’s refugee camps. He is still waiting for his wife and two kids to come to the US, so that they can finally be together. He said, “All I can do is pray and watch the news. This election is the only hope for me to reunite with my wife and sons.”
In an article published in the New York Times, it has been mentioned that the 32-two-year-old Hussein, who hails from Somalia had the required papers already in process when he fell in love with his wife in the camp. Things took an unwanted turn for him when President Donald Trump was elected to the office in 2016. His administration banned the refugee program and banned the entry of individuals from predominantly Muslim countries into the United States.
Hussein keeps his children’s photographs in his pocket and goes to work. He is in constant touch with his family via WhatsApp. Hussein was worried when Trump was ahead in the initial election stages and had not eaten anything since then.
But the recent lead of Biden has been a ray of much needed hope for Hussein. “I am very, very happy. You can’t imagine. I will be with my family,” he further expressed.
