China sends congratulatory wishes to Biden, after holding back for almost a week
Russia, Brazil, North Korea and Mexico are yet to congratulate Joe Biden.
Kathmandu. China has sent a congratulatory message to the President-Elect of the United States of America, Joe Biden. This message comes nearly a week after the election results were declared.
According to an article in the CNN, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stated, “We congratulate Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris. At the same time, we understand that the outcome of this US election will be ascertained in accordance with US laws and procedures.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping had congratulated President Donald Trump a day after he won the elections back in 2016. Experts suggested that Beijing was reluctant to wish Biden as they did not want to risk and go against the current administration.
The wish coming in from Beijing sends a signal to many analysts that it is ready to accept the result of the 2020 US Presidential Election. Up until today the only input from China was that the administration had “noticed that Mr Biden had been declared winner.”
As per China Daily, it has been put to the fore that, “China is always ready to work with the US to manage their differences. Whoever is in the White House should look at the regional situation objectively.”
Trump’s term in the White House saw a strained relation develop between the two nations, with trade wars and an increased involvement in Taiwan, that only served to agitate Beijing. There are a number of considerations for the President-Elect when he will eventually look towards the vast Indo-Pacific region and the South China Sea. The optimism that has been attached with Biden’s Presidency is that it may lead to a more stable US relation with China in comparison to that of Trump’s, along with a greater participation of the US in the multilateral platforms to combat global threats.
Although it may be of import to note that Biden, when speaking at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania had criticized Trump’s approach to dealing with China as “weak and chaotic.”
He had further added, “I’ll do what he’s (Trump was) unable to do: lead an effective strategy to mobilize a true international effort to pressure, isolate, and punish China to actually strengthen manufacturing jobs in Pennsylvania and across the country.”
China is one of last countries to wish the new president on his win. Russia is another major power that is yet to offer its congratulatory message. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson from Kremlin has claimed, “We believe the correct thing to do would be to wait for the official election result.”
Along with Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and North Korea have also been holding back with their congratulatory calls and messages for Joe Biden.
