Closure of border creates problem for Olangchungola locals
Taplejung. The people of Olangchungola, Taplejung are having hard time because of the prohibition on movement from Tiptala pass at the border with Tibet, China. The border has been sealed after the spread of COVID-19 in China.
The locals of Olangchungola rely on the nearest Tibetan market for food and daily consumables. Due to the border closure, they have not been able to go to Tibet for a long time, and they have no other way than to get all materials of daily use from the markets in Taplejung, spending more for transportation cost. They used to buy all necessary goods for their animals and for themselves from Tibet, earlier.
“It is convenient for the people of the solitary mountainous village of Olangchungola to get their daily goods from Tibet than from Taplejung Bazaar. Tibet is nearer, hence, the transportation cost is cheaper,” said ward chair Cheten Sherpa to National News Agency (RSS).
The closure of the border has also affected the export of the carpets from Olangchungola to Tibet. Tibet is the main market for the carpets produced in Olangchungola.
