Hong Kong. A fire in a tenement building in Hong Kong killed seven people and left 10 others injured on Sunday night, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said.

The flat located at the junction of Canton Road and Saigon Street in Yau Ma Tei caught fire at around 8 pm. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about half an hour but it was not until two hours later that it was finally put out, Xinhua reports.

Paramedics sent 18 people to different hospitals, out of them, 4 males and 3 females, including a 9-year-old boy died. According to local media, the casualties are mostly Nepalis.

The fire started from a Nepali restaurant located on the first floor. One of the injured victims was celebrating his son’s birthday. It is speculated that the sound insulation panels caught fire from the candles. Nine relatives of the injured were celebrating the birthday party together at the restaurant.

The fire is considered to be the deadliest in Hong Kong in almost a decade. A media report says that the building did not have any fire suppression systems, such as sprinklers.
