Al Qaeda’s chief of staff Zawahiri dead, had become head after Osama bin Laden’s death
Kathmandu. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the founder and leader of the Muslim extremist group al-Qaeda, has been killed. He was one of the leaders who founded Al Qaeda in 1988 along with Osama bin Laden. Zawahiri took over the reins of al Qaeda, in 2011, after the US forces killed Osama bin Laden.
Journalist Hassan Hassan tweeted, “Ayman Zawahiri, al-Qaeda leader & Osama bin Laden successor, died a month ago of natural causes in his domicile. The news is making the rounds in close circles.”
Al Arabi’s report has mentioned that Hassan recently learned from a source close to al-Qaeda that had confirmed Zawahiri’s death. Zawahiri’ death has not been officially confirmed.
Born in Egypt, Zawahiri was believed to be in an undisclosed location in Pakistan. He interacted with group members through semi-regular video lectures.
He was last seen in a video celebrating the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
