US Navy achieves historic success shooting down an ICBM
Kathmandu. The United States has successfully shot down an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time in history by launching another missile from a warship. During the successful test on Tuesday, the target missile was dropped by another missile, the US Missile Defense Agency reported as per Fox News.
The target ICBM missile was launched from a test range in the Marshall Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean at around 12:50 am. It was then shot down in space by a missile launched from the guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn at sea, according to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
The missile was shot down by the SM-3 Block IIA ballistic missile defense interceptor. The defense interceptor had been developed by Raytheon Missiles and Defense and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. MDA Director Vice Admiral Jon Hill mentioned the successful test of the target flying technology was a very complex milestone.
The test was the first of its kind regarding war technology. Earlier, ICBM was tested flying in the sky, but with the interceptor on the ground. This was the first time ICBM had flown from the sea. Previously, it had also been tested from ground bases in Alaska and California.
