US-China friction escalates upon the Dalai Lama issue
Kathmandu. The United States of America (US) has challenged China on the issue of the Dalai Lama. China is all set to choose their new Dalai Lama but US claims that they have no religious basis to choose the new one. The present 14th Dalai Lama has been living in India since he fled Tibet in 1959, and the Tibetan government-in-exile runs from Himachal Pradesh.
According to an article in The Times of India, The US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Samuel D Brownback has said, “I travelled to Dharamshala, India to speak to the Tibetan community that they were assembled in exile and to tell them that the US is opposed to China picking the next Dalai Lama. They have no right to do that. They have no theological basis to do that. The Tibetan Buddhists have successfully picked their leader for hundreds of years, if not longer and they have the right to do that now.”
He also accused China that they will be creating more terrorists by preventing people from practicing their right of religious freedom.
Brownback called on China to stop their war on faith, adding that the US is seeking to prevent such situations from spreading towards other countries around the world.
