France backs out from upgrading Pakistani jets and submarines
Kathmandu. President Emmanuel Macron had previously issued a speech where he claimed that Islam was “in crisis,” vowing that he would act against radical Islam within his nation. The statement immediately put France and the greater Muslim world in a conflict.
France and Pakistan’s relations have soured after the recent incident where a high school teacher was killed for showing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in a classroom. France has now denied to upgrade Pakistani fleet of Mirage fighter jets, air defense system and Agosta 90B class submarines. The French government’s decision not to upgrade the Mirage III and Mirage 5 fighter jets could severely impact the Pakistan Air Force which has had about 150 Mirage fighter jets manufactured by the French firm Dassault Aviation.
An article in the Hindustan Times has mentioned that the decision from France came after Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan along Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized President Macron’s steps and posited that they should unite against “growing islamophobia in non-Muslim states.”
The conflict has seemingly escalated as Pakistani public and local groups have been demanding their government to put a ban on the French goods, with a document carrying the signatures of the Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and the Interior Minister, who have provided their agreements to the cause.
