Scotland first in the world to make women’s sanitary items free for use
Kathmandu. Scotland recently has passed a historic bill which has made all sanitary items free in Scotland, making the country the first in the world to make such items free.
In an article in Al Jazeera, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said, “Proud to vote for this groundbreaking legislation, making Scotland the first country in the world to provide free period products for all who need them.” The sanitary items such as sanitary napkins and tampons will be available for free in public places such as pharmacies, community centers and youth clubs. An estimated annual cost of 24 million pounds ($32m) from the taxpayers will be contributing towards this cause.
The bill’s proposer, Scottish Labor Member of Parliament Monica Lennon, said, “No one should have to worry about where their next tampon, pad or reusable is coming from. Scotland will not be the last country to consign period poverty to history, but we have the chance to be the first.”
Scotland was one of the first countries to provide free sanitary products in schools, colleges and universities in 2018. United Kingdom is also planning to abolish the ‘tampon tax’ in January 2021.
