Police arrest rhino poacher absconding for 15 years

Kathmandu. Suraj Chaudhary, 36, of Bharatpur Metropolis-26, Divyanagar, who was convicted of poaching one-horned rhino, has been arrested after 15 years.

Chaudhary, a fugitive Nepal Army personnel, was convicted of killing a rhino and smuggling its horn at Bhalutapu across Shisuwaghat 15 years ago. He was  mobilized by wildlife smugglers according to information officer of the Chitwan National Park (CNP) Lokendra Adhikari. They sold the rhino horn to the Pushpa Lal Bhandari group, Adhikari added.

As per National news Agency (RSS), a case had been filed against him on poaching charge on 28 September 2005 and he had been slapped a jail-term of 15 years and penalty of cash Rs 100,000 on 4 January 2008.

Police arrested Chaudhary from Khurkhure on Thursday. Chaudhary had returned Nepal from Qatar a year ago. He has been sent to the District Prison Office Chitwan, CNP informed.
