Everest gets taller by 86 centimetres
Kathmandu. The tallest peak in the world Mt Everest has become taller by 86 centimetres, about 3 feet. Government of Nepal and China today jointly announced the increase of height and declared Mt Everest being 8848.86 meters tall.
Nepal measured the height of Mt Everest taking around two years. During the Nepal visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping last year, Nepal and China had agreed to announce the height of Mt Everest jointly.
A press conference was organized by the Survey Department to disclose the new height after the study and analysis of survey reports from both Nepal and China.
It is the first time Nepal has declared the height of Everest using the data obtained with its own resources, means and technology, according to the Survey Department of Nepal. Two Nepali surveyors had summated Everest in 2019 for the measurement of the height of the peak.
Earlier, Nepal had given official recognition to the measurement provided by the Indian survey in 1955. The height of Everest was 8848 meters then.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi had addressed the program.
