WHO to investigate coronavirus origins in Wuhan
Kathmandu, December 17. The World Health Organization (WHO) is all set to investigate the origins of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China. Beijing failed to submit an independent investigation after which WHO decided to step in.
Fabian Leendertz of Germany’s Robert Koch Institute said, “It’s really not about finding a guilty country. It’s about trying to understand what happened and then see if, based on those data, we can try to reduce the risk in the future.” He said that the mission will take about four to five weeks and the main aim is to find out if the virus originated in Wuhan or not. The virus is rumored to have originated from the animal markets in Wuhan.
Researchers say that the coronavirus could have been going undetected in bats from many decades and it was detected only because of the animal-human transfer. Dr. Li Wenliang tried to warn the paramedics about a possible outbreak last December, but was shut down blaming him for spreading false rumors. Chinese media claim that the virus originated outside China whereas there have been allegations that the virus was originated in labs in China in a deliberate manner.
Countries around the world including United States (US), Australia and United Kingdom (UK) have demanded for a proper inquiry on China regarding the virus. The Trump administration also blamed WHO for showing their soft side towards China and decided to remove its funding towards the organization.
China helped WHO control the virus by sharing its genetic code, after which the WHO praised China, which is raising questions and pointing fingers at China.
