Indian Prime Minister Modi visits Sikh temple amidst farmers’ protests
Kathmandu, December 21. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid an unscheduled visit to a Sikh temple in Delhi. His visit comes after around 25 people have died protesting against the recent reforms in farm laws.
Prime Minister Modi prayed at the Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and obliged the visitors seeking to click pictures with him. He tweeted, “This morning, I prayed at the historic Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where the pious body of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was cremated. I felt extremely blessed. I, like millions around the world, am deeply inspired by the kindnesses of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji.”
Thousands of farmers are protesting against the new farming laws, which are said to give larger profits to commercial companies. Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have been protesting in Delhi, with the support of diaspora as well.
A 65-year-old farmer took his life in the protests on Wednesday and also left behind a note mentioning that he sacrificed himself for the cause. However, Prime Minister Modi addressed the protestors in Madhya Pradesh through a video call and said that he is ready to address the issues but disagreed to annul the passed laws.
