New threat of mucormycosis post COVID-19 in India

Kathmandu, December 21. Sri Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in Delhi, India has reported cases of mucormycosis, a black fungal infection caused after the infection of corona. The infection has caused the loss of eyesight, removal of the nose and jaw bone in patients. According to an article in India today, there are 44 registered cases and 9 people are dead from the deadly infection in Ahmedabad as well.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that enters the body through burns and cuts in the skins. People whose immunity is weak, cancer patients, patients with low WBC count and diabetics are suggested to be extra aware regarding the disease.

Symptoms of the infection include nose obstruction, swelling in the eye or cheeks, and black dry crusts in the nose. The disease was mostly seen in patients who had recovered from coronavirus. Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot tweeted, “According to experts, there has been an increased risk of mucormycosis disease among people who have recovered from Covid-19, which has led to many deaths. In this disease, there is a risk of damage to many organs of the body including the brain. An alert for the disease has been issued in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.”

The treatment for the disease is said to be expensive and capsules could cost up to INR 43,000. The precautions that one can take against this disease is to wear masks, wear gloves and long-sleeve clothes while gardening and decrease amount of steroids if one takes those.
