Anti-Modi alliance wins majority in local polls at Kashmir
Kathmandu, December 24. The Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) from Kashmir has won by majority in the local polls. The alliance managed to get 112 out of 280 seats in the District Development Council elections in Kashmir.
Modi’s party BJP could have only 74 seats in the local elections which was held in India administered Kashmir. According to an article in Al Jazeera, 51% voters cast their votes calling it the “biggest festival of democracy”.
The election is said to be a part of a procedure in which citizens elect their village representatives directly, who then vote to create planning councils for village clusters. Members are also directly elected to the larger district planning councils, but they do not have legislative authority and are only responsible for economic development and public well-being.
Kashmir has been a matter of debate between India and Pakistan since 1989. With the abolishment of article 370 last year, India administered Kashmir has started its political development and activities, which do not seem to align with the interest of majority ruling party.
