Indian Prime Minister Modi addresses farmers, blames opposition for spreading fears
Kathmandu, December 26. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conducted a virtual talk with the farmers, one month after the protests against the recent farming laws. He talked with farmers from seven states and reminded them of ‘PM Kisan’, a cash transfer policy launched in February 2019 which had benefitted them.
Prime Minister Modi also told the farmers that the opposition parties are just spreading fears and the reforms are much needed and will benefit the farmers in the long run. He said in his address, “Through these agricultural reforms, we have given better options to the farmers. Those making big speeches today did nothing for farmers when they were in power.”
Prime Minister Modi’s address came a day after the opposition party called for a special parliamentary session to withdraw the farming laws.
So far, six rounds of talks have been held between the farmers and government officials with no resolution in place. The farmers and their produce account for 15% of the country’s economy.
