19 thousand Nepalis returned from Saudi Arabia due to pandemic

Kathmandu, December 27.  More than 19,000 Nepalis who lost their jobs and had their contracts expired  have returned back to Nepal from Saudi Arabia due to the increased risk of coronavirus. Till date, Nepal Airlines, Himal Airlines, Air Arabia, Fly Dubai, Jazeera  Airways and Salaam Airlines’ chartered flights have transported 18,842 individuals more than 200 dead bodies to Nepal.

With the help of the Nepali Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah, the Saudi government has so far issued exit visas to 1,448 Nepalis who had not renewed their visas. It has also set up temporary offices in various cities in Saudi Arabia to facilitate the collection of documents required for the renewal of passports, along with providing online forms from their Facebook page.

The Saudi government has suspended all international flights for a week since December 21 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Nepali Embassy in Riyadh and the consulate in Jeddah have reported that 88 Nepalis have died so far due to COVID-19.
