Kathmandu, December 29. Bangladesh has started moving the second group of Rohingyas to Bhasan Char, a remote island near the Bay of Bengal. The first group was moved earlier in December.
International organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have been increasingly concerned regarding the movement and has urged Bangladesh to immediately halt the movement. It is said that the island that the Rohingyas are being transferred to is hugely prone to natural disasters such as flood, cyclones and high tides. They also have been claiming that the refugees are being transported without consent and they should be allowed for an independent inspection of the island.
Mostafizur Rahman, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh and Ambassador to the UN Office in Geneva, said that Rohingya had been relocated on a voluntary basis and that the government had taken steps to improve their quality of life, livelihoods and for their safety.
While Human Rights Watch has said that there is no actual information of the island and whether or not the rights of Rohingyas shall be ensured, the Bangladeshi government has claimed that the movement is voluntary and they will get better healthcare, education and other facilities at the Basan Char island.
