Supreme Court orders payments for sugarcane purchase to be made within a month
Kathmandu, Dec 31 : The Supreme Court has issued an interim order regarding the payment of purchase of sugarcane to the farmers. A single bench of Justice Kumar Regmi on Thursday issued the order directing the buyers and industrialist to pay the amount to sugarcane farmers within a month.
The order reads: “Sugarcane farmers are compelled to do protest every year from their district headquarters to the country’s capital Kathmandu to get paid for the goods they sell. This situation is not only unjust in itself but also unacceptable to the welfare state. From today, the sugarcane farmers must be paid by the buyer or industry within a month.”
The court issued the order after hearing the writ petition filed by advocate Dr. Punya Prasad Khatiwada against the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. Sugarcane farmers are protesting saying that they have not received payment for their sugarcane sales.
The order states that even the fundamental right to live with dignity has been violated as farmers are unable to spend their capital, hard work, sweat and some of them are on personal loans from banks for immediate production of sugarcane, livelihood, family sustenance, education, and health. RSS
