Kathmandu, January 6. Prime Minister of UK, Boris Johnson has canceled his visit to India, weeks before India’s Republic Day celebrations on January 25.

PM Johnson expressed his gratitude over the invitation and was keen in visiting, but the rising coronavirus cases in UK has forced him to cancel his visit. During a call with Indian PM Modi, he said the same and PM Modi also responded that he understood the situation, adding that he wished the best to Johnson for the control of the pandemic.

India usually names the guest months in advance of the Republic Day ceremony. This is the first year since 1966 that the Republic Day celebrations in India will be held without a foreign guest, as anyone is unlikely to accept an invitation on such a short notice. Earlier in December 2019, US President Trump had declined the invitation after which South African President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the invitation.

Modi and Johnson talked about the co-operation between the two countries along with covid vaccines being made available for countries around the world. It is also rumored that UK is also likely to join the Quad alliance after Brexit.

Johnson is now likely to visit India in the first half of 2021, during which the coronavirus cases are expected to come in control.
