In pictures: 299th Prithvi Jayanti celebration
Kathmandu, Jan 11 : On the occasion of the 299th birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah and National Unity Day, various programs were held all over the country including Kathmandu. People assembled at Shanti Vatika at Ratna Park and garlanded the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah.
Prithvi Narayan Shah was born at Gorkha Durbar on the 11th Jan, 1779 BS. Nepal was unified by Prithvi Narayan Shahh, who became king at the age of 20 and fought battles annexing kingdoms and principalities till his death at the age of 52,
Nepal’s journey of unification came to an end during Girwan Yuddha Bikram Shah’s rule. For around 70 years, the unification campaign started by Prithvi Narayan Shah continued.
Former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) DIG Ramesh Kharel, actress Manisha Koirala and other social activists participated in the function at Shanti Vatika on the birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who gave a state and identity to the Nepalis by uniting Nepal. The activists also criticized the government for not celebrating the National Unity Day.
