Kathmandu, Jan 12 : A total of 56.5 lakh doses of India’s indigenous Covid Vaccine Covishield were dispatched on Tuesday morning from its birthplace Pune.

Three temperature-controlled trucks carrying 478 boxes of vaccine rolled out from the Serum Institute of India to the Pune airport from where the boxes will be loaded into aircrafts that will carry the delicate cargo to 12 other cities.

The government of India is preparing to launch its first Covid-19 vaccination campaign on January 16. While speaking at a digital Convention on Saturday the Prime Minister said: “India is ready to save humanity with two ‘Made in India’ Covid-19 vaccines”.

30 million health workers and 270 million elderly citizens will get injected by July 2021.

With over 10.4 million COVID-19 cases, India has become the second-highest COVID-19 infected country in the world. Moreover, India is also suffering from its rapidly shrinking economy. Therefore, with a population of over one billion, the general vaccination campaign would be very complex and challenging.
