Kathmandu, January 13. Popular messaging application, WhatsApp has over 2 billion monthly active users around the world. WhatsApp sent a message to all its users last week informing them about the new privacy policy which would share the users’ information from WhatsApp to Facebook.

The information includes that of battery level information, IP address, browser information, mobile network, phone number and the internet service provider. The contents of the chat, however, would not be shared as it is end-to-end encrypted.

Such sharing of information maybe objectionable to maximum users as it seems that the users are being tracked on every message they send or anything they do on WhatsApp. Although Mark Zukerberg has mentioned about merging of all messaging platforms and has done so for Facebook and Instagram, it seems concerning that he has been using a method of ‘surveillance capitalism’, using such messaging platforms to record our chat history, location and other preferences.

Elon Musk has tweeted that users must now shift to ‘Signal’, an end-to-end encrypted messaging app, that allows no one to access your messages, including the application itself.

However, the changes in the privacy policy of WhatsApp have not been applied for users in European region.
