Heavy snowfall isolates northern Namkha for five months
Simkot, January 15. Due to heavy snowfall in the entry checkpoints, Limi village in the northern Namkha Rural Municipality will remain closed for the next 5 months.
According to Ward Chairman Paljor Tamang, the 4 to 5 feet of snow in two entry checkpoints at Nara and Nulu lake will only be cleared after May. The helicopter airlift service is the only option during the time of emergency.
Nepal Telecom’s VSAT telephone service has also shut down in the area leaving WorldLink internet service as the only means of communication.
Since the third week of October, the temperature in the northern areas of Humla had dropped to freezing levels. The temperature that records at minus in the night has the water in streams, taps and buckets freezing to ice. Like every winter, this winter also the hoteliers and Nepal Police in high areas including Hilsa and Limi had shifted to the district headquarters, whereas, the Armed Police Force led by Inspector Suraj KC, deployed in Border outposts remained in Hilsa for border security.
Humla experiences heavy rainfall and up to minus 15-degree temperature in the month of January and February.
