Australia to kill a pigeon for crossing the Pacific
Kathmandu, January 16. A pigeon named ‘Joe’, has crossed the Pacific and made his way into Australia, is said to be brought down by the Australian authorities.
The pigeon was lost from a race in the Oregon, US in late October, but was discovered in Australia two months later. Authorities have said that the pigeon poses a ‘direct biosecurity risk’ to the Australian bird population.
The Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment said that the bird needs to be killed as there is a danger of infection to the local birds. It is not clear on how the bird flied 8,000 miles from US to Australia. Officials say that the bird might have been sneaked in through a cargo.
One can legally bring a pigeon in Australia from the US, but it costs a lot of dollars and none have been imported in over a decade.
