Thirteen of the world’s 14 peaks taller than 8,000-metres have been climbed in winter. K2, however, has remained undefeated in winter till now. Chhang Dawa Sherpa, director of Seven Summit Treks, who is also close to the summit of Mt K2 to make new mountaineering history, has informed DCNepal that 10 Nepali climbers, including the fixing team, will make final summit push around 1-2 pm on Saturday.
The 10 Nepali climbers making the ascent are Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma G, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa.
Mingma Sherpa, managing director of Seven Summit Treks, told DCNepal that this year, the biggest challenge for climbers is “The Bottleneck”, the territory above 8,000-metres also known in mountaineering as the “death zone” when the human body is slowly shut down by a lack of oxygen.
The Nepali climbers famous for their strength, tenacity and mountaineering acumen are determined to make the K2 mission possible and create a new mountaineering history.
