Kathmandu, January 18. Aristeidis Adamopoulos, vice president of the Hellenic Sailing Federation (HSF) has been charged with sexual misconduct by a leading athlete. He resigned as soon as the allegations were put forward.
Olympic sailing champion Sofia Bekatorou has revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by the HSF official in 1998. She also revealed that the incident was non-consensual and took place ahead of the Sydney Olympics in 2000, when she was aged 21.
Bekatorou is now 43 and was silent all these years so that she could continue competing. But she chose to speak up now so that other athletes could also voice their experiences. She is to reappear by the prosecutor on Tuesday to provide further details.
The incident has brought forward praise for Bekatorou for speaking out. The prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has also praised her for her brave move.
Investigations have been going on and two other leading athletes have also spoke about similar assaults.
