Mali to vaccinate its 4.2 million people with AstraZeneca
Kathmandu, January 24. The Government of Mali has announced that it has chosen AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for its vaccination campaign that will begin in April. The vaccine is scheduled to be delivered by the end of March.
The vaccine campaign will inoculate 4.2 million people with the vaccine developed by Oxford, with priority given to the health workers, elderly and those with illnesses in the first phase.
The vaccine shot from Oxford-AstraZeneca is likely to become the dominant method of inoculation in the world. It is a fraction of the cost of other vaccines, at $ 3 to $ 4 a dose.
The Cabinet expressed that Mali wants to buy more than 8.4 million quills which would cost more than USD 58 million, shall be bought with the financial support of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and the World Bank.
Unlike the ultra-cold freezers required by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, AstraZeneca can be shipped and stored in regular refrigerators for six months, making it easier to administer in poorer countries.
South Africa has also ordered 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca from India. Fearing the theft, SA has decided to store the imported vaccines in a highly secured secret place.
